Restringing pearls is both an art and a necessary maintenance task. Because pearl silk weakens, stretches, and absorbs oils over time, experts generally recommend restringing every 12 to 36 months depending on how often you wear them.
Here is a guide to the tools, techniques, and signs that it’s time for a refresh.
🚩 Signs Your Pearls Need Restringing
Gaps: If you can see the thread between the pearls and the knots, the silk has stretched.
Discoloration: If the thread looks grey or yellowish, it has likely absorbed skin oils and dirt.
Fraying: Any visible fuzz or thinning near the clasp is a "red alert" that the strand may snap soon.
Uniformity: If the pearls no longer lay flat against your skin and instead "kink" or bunch up.
💡 Pro Tips for Longevity
The "Last On, First Off" Rule: Put your pearls on after hairspray and perfume have dried. Take them off first to avoid snagging.
Storage: Store pearls flat. Hanging them on a jewelry hook causes the silk to stretch prematurely. Natural pearls are an organic product that will change and discolor over time. more so if not in a protective pearl case or pouch.
